The series “You” is an adaptation of Caroline Kepnes’s novels, namely “You”, “Hidden Bodies” and “You Love Me”. The show revolves around Joe Goldberg, a book manager based in New York, who becomes fixated on an aspiring writer named Guinevere Beck. Joe stalks her through social media and technology, removing any obstacles to their romance by killing her friends and ex-boyfriend. He also befriends his neighbor’s kid, Paco, seeing himself in him.
In the second season, Joe changes his identity to Will Bettelheim and moves to Los Angeles to escape his ex-girlfriend, Candace, who seeks revenge on him. He meets Love Quinn, an avid chef and member of the powerful Quinn family, and becomes obsessed with her, repeating his old patterns of obsession and violence. However, Love has her own secrets.
By the third season, Joe and Love are married and parents to a baby boy, Henry. They move to the suburb of Madre Linda to start anew. Joe becomes obsessed with his neighbor, Natalie Engler, and a local librarian, Marienne Bellamy. However, Love is determined to protect their family and marriage from Joe’s compulsive actions.
The show’s script is well-written and executed, with an unpredictable plot that makes the viewer feel like they are inside Joe’s mind. The focus on details answers all questions about Joe’s character. The show’s title reflects Joe’s habit of referring to his targets as “you” until he forms an image of them in his head.
The acting is spectacular, with Penn Badgley and Victoria Pedretti standing out as Joe and Love, respectively. They truly personify their characters. “You” is a must-watch for psychological thriller fans, and season 4 cannot come soon enough.
This is my first attempt at writing a review, but I feel compelled to share my thoughts on this exceptional show. It’s amazing in every aspect – from the cast to the storyline to the character development. But what truly sets it apart is how it takes you on a wild emotional rollercoaster that never seems to end. Even when the ride goes off the rails, you still want to stay on it.
I never thought I would root so hard for a couple, only to watch them turn on each other. Joe and Love’s relationship was heart-wrenching, as they slowly descended from a loving couple seeking a fresh start to trying to kill each other and cheat on one another. It’s a testament to how well the characters are written that I felt so invested in their story.
Joe and Love are perfect for each other, but the problem is they’re both psychos. They know they can’t trust each other because of what they’re capable of. It’s disappointing to see them separate, especially when Love still had faith in their marriage, and Joe was already planning a future with another woman.
